Do-it-yourself market valuations
Article Abstract:
It is difficult to assess whether UK stock prices are too high, though a correction is likely to occur at some time. Indices can be misleading since they are not inflation-adjusted. Chartists argue that the future performance of stocks can be assessed by extrapolating from past performance. They may use average price earnings ratios as a guide to value. Stocks can also be compared with government securities to assess their value. Individual investors will have difficulty in following the different measures of stock valuations in detail and are better advised to seek undervalued stocks.

The dark side of the US miracle
Article Abstract:
The US economy is apparently combining low inflation with strong economic growth, and there are different opinions as to why this is occurring. Some analysts point to a combination of factors such as the strength of the US dollar, low inflation overseas, and high stock prices, which have boosted consumption. Others pay more attention to technological progress, though stock prices could still falls as progress slows, or if too much is expected of technological advances and there is overinvestment. It is unclear when stock prices may fall, and this could take several years.

The silver lining on Asian clouds
Article Abstract:
The Asian economic crisis has affected US stock prices due to concern about US corporate earnings. Weaker Asian economies are likely to lead to a drop in US bond yields, which tends to support stock prices and could help earnings growth. Equities could still be expensive if long-term forecasts for corporate earnings are too optimistic. The equity risk premium could also increase as a result of the Asian crisis and its impact on attitudes to risk.
