From high growth to new growth
Article Abstract:
The Malaysian economy is better positioned than is that of Thailand. Malaysian borrowers use the domestic capital markets more than do their Thai counterparts, with the result that while Thailand's external GDP represents 50% of GDP, Malaysia's external debt represents just 31% of GDP. The Asian economic crisis has brought into question the Malaysian government's desire to change its economy from low-level manufacturing to value-added production and services.

Asset price inflation in Asia
Article Abstract:
US Federal Reserve Board Chmn Alan Greenspan has said that the Asian asset markets are irrationally exuberant, which has prompted central bankers in Asia to pay attention to asset price inflation. Asset price inflation in Asia has been exacerbated by a combination of large trade surpluses and open capital accounts. To cope with this problem, central bankers in Asia must overcome their obsession with running up large accumulations of foreign reserves.
