Horace Mann Educators Corp (HMN) is the insurance company pioneering in teachers' car insurance, and later expanding to homeowners' insurance. Horace Mann employs ingenious marketing strategies that are paying off well for the company. The National Education Association endorses the products of HMN. Majority of its 778 exclusive agents are former educators who are trained in selling both car and homeowners insurance, and these agents get a profitable compensation package from the company. All of the financial ratings company gave HMN very high marks and good projections.

State Auto combines safety, risk into winning combination

State Auto Financial Corp outperformed its competitors and posted net earnings of $8.7 million in 1991, considered one of the worst years for the property/casualty insurance industry. Book value in 1991 increased to $16.65 a share from $11.87 during the previous year. Similarly, the firm's Combined Ratio dropped to 101.9% from 105.6% in 1990. Share price climbed to $1.76 despite a 46% increase in shares outstanding as a result of an earlier initial public offering.
