Hostile bidders expected to swoop
Article Abstract:
Thistle Hotels has lost its preferred bidder, thought to be Nomura International. The company's stock price dropped after the announcement that talks had ended. A hostile bidder could appear and would need the backing of Brierley Investments, a New Zealand company holding 46% of Thistle, in order to succeed. Brierley had sought a bid of 1.8 billion pounds sterling, but could accept less. Companies thought to have bid for Thistle include Accor, Blackstone, and Patriot American.

Split views on Granada
Article Abstract:
A sample of six stockbrokers is divided on whether Granada stocks should be rated a buy or a sell. UBS rates the stock a buy in view of Granada's stake in BSkyB. The other buyers are BZW and Lehman Brothers. Paribas rates Granada stocks a hold and is concerned about a possible cyclical downturn in contract catering. Rowan Dartington is also a holder and sees Granada as losing market share in the media industry. Williams de Broe is also a holder.
