Improving depository institution efficiency in a competitive environment
Article Abstract:
While there are still signs of trouble ahead for many despository institutions, the most significant change with the financial services industry has been the shrinking share of an expanding pool of assets accounted for by depository institutions. The secular changes accelerated by advances in information technology reflect an increasingly competitive financial marketplace. Depositories will need to reduce inefficiencies in order to remain competitive in the future.

Collateral, type of lender and relationship banking as determinants of credit risk
Article Abstract:
The study conducted to find determinants of credit risk in loans examined three million loans disbursed by financial institutions in Spain in a full business cycle (1988 - 2000) found that the collateralised loans have a higher probability of default. The study also found that the loans granted by savings banks are riskier and the willingness to take more risk increases with the closeness of the relations between the banker - borrower.
