Upton and Southern owns a headhunter, Garner International, as well as a department store business. The company plans to focus on recruitment services with a retail side, and Andrew Garner, from Garner International, has joined Upton's board. Garner could achieve an operating profit of some 500,000 pounds sterling, and the stores should improve their performance in 1998. A pre-tax profit of 600,000 pounds sterling could be achieved, and the tax bill will be reduced by tax losses.

They may have a number of reasons for seeking flexibility such as not being sure about a new operation. Fully-serviced accommodation may initially appear expensive but can be cheaper than having to set up an office, especially when the flexibility of being able to leave with little notice is taken into account.
