Iraq war costs may hit $500 billion or more: Study
Article Abstract:
A paper by the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments (CSBA) projects estimated in March 2006 that the cost of the war in Iraq already have totaled $226 billion, but counting another $23 billion for Iraqi reconstruction work, and the tab might rise to $500 billion by 2016. This costs estimate assumes a scenario where the number of troops in Afghanistan and Iraq declines from about 200,000 currently to 158,000 by September 20, 2007 and thence to about 50,000 by fiscal 2010, remaining at that level through 2016.
