Just say yes
Article Abstract:
The Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co's philosophy is to give things a try, take chances and assume the best. This credo encourages employees to be creative and come up with products that are ingenious and useful. Examples of these are Thinsulate, an insulating material used for winter clothes, Post-it Notes and Scotch tape. To come up with award-winning ideas, the company allows employees to devote 15% of their time to develop new products. As such, design is not assigned to one department alone, but it is the responsibility of the entire work force.

Carpenters are better than tools
Article Abstract:
The technology, entertainment and design conferences initiated by Richard Saul Wurman aim at exploring the relevance of technological developments to present-day needs. A fundamental concern is the preoccupation of companies in creating technology that concentrate on passing concerns like designing computer games and recreation-oriented devices. Proliferating the market with advanced equipment does not lessen everyday worries. Rather, scientists must develop their creativity to explore applications and innovations that can address current problems.

People power
Article Abstract:
Technology, Entertainment and Design's eighth conference, held in Monterey, CA, saw the use of computer technology in amazing ways. Paul MacCready's demonstration of a two ounces airplane and Aimee Mullins talk about her two pairs of prosthesis were highlights of the conference. Both of them underlined the use of technology in hidden ways rather than as raw computing power.
