L'Oreal: no kiss and make up
Article Abstract:
Benckiser has stated that it is to make an offer for Maybelline, the US cosmetics concern, that is higher than an offer made by L'Oreal for the company. Benckiser had previously bid for the company but appeared to have withdrawn in Dec 1995. L'Oreal would rank second in the US cosmetics industry if it succeeded in the bid. This has led to concern over competition issues among US regulators. L'Oreal may match a higher offer for Maybelline, if Benckiser states a price.

Article Abstract:
L'Oreal is acquiring Maybelline, a mass market perfumes and make-up concern. L'Oreal, which ranks first in the European fragrances and cosmetics market, has also acquired Jade Kosmetik, a German company. The Maybelline deal should increase L'Oreal's access to the mass market in the US. The deal has yet to be approved by shareholders and the regulators. L'Oreal has denied rumors that a stake in Sythelabo would be disposed of to raise funds for the acquisition.
