Mergers made in hell
Article Abstract:
UK takeover business totalled 45 billion pounds sterling in 1995, and this figure could increase in 1996. Takeovers have often resulted in problems, and examples include Brent Walker and Ferranti. Share price performance may worsen for reasons other than the takeover, as could be true for Blue Circle, hit by problems in the UK construction industry. The UK market sees takeovers in an optimistic light, arguing that conditions have improved. Interest rates look less likely to rise sharply, increasing the cost of servicing loans for takeovers, and the labor market is more flexible.

To Emu or not to Emu
Article Abstract:
There are arguments in favor and against European monetary union (Emu). Arguments for Emu include the elimination of the need to hedge against currency fluctuations and the end of currency uncertainty. Emu should also lead to lower inflation rates. Disadvantages include less control over monetary policy, and the cost of implementing changes such as bringing in a new currency, changing accounting systems, altering slot machines, and the like.

US economy: US rate hopes dampened
Article Abstract:
Alan Greenspan, Federal Reserve Bank chairman, has stated that US output does not appear to be moving toward a sharp drop. Sustained growth is more likely, he argues, and any setback is likely to be short-term. This means that US interest rates are unlikely to be reduced. He is also concerned that a rise in the price of gold could indicate inflationary pressures. UK interest rates may still be reduced, even if US rates are not lowered.
