Metals market: just checking
Article Abstract:
The Securities and Investments Board (SIB) will review the metal trading industry following losses incurred by Yasuo Hamanaka from Sumitomo. The SIB has issued a consultation paper to start off the review. The London Metal Exchange (LME) accounts for 95% of metal contracts traded on international exchanges and was due to be examined by the SIB which has brought forward its review. The exchange seeks to attract industrial users though companies seeking to benefit from short-term changes in price have been using the exchange more.

Metals round-up
Article Abstract:
Base metals prices have dropped in 1996 despite generalized economic recovery. Aluminum and copper have seen the sharpest falls. Precious metals have seen some drop in price despite an initial rise in the price of gold. Copper prices could fall if China dumps large amounts of copper on global markets. Lead benefits from strong demand and there is also buoyant demand for zinc. Demand for gold is rising in Asia though supply could increase with sales by the International Monetary Fund.

Rushing for the exit
Article Abstract:
Commodity markets have been affected by volatility with a price rise in 1994 followed by a fall in 1995. The rise in 1994 followed a fall, and an increase in economic growth looked set to boost commodity prices. Fears arising from a possible slowdown in US economic growth contributed to a fall in commodity prices in 1995. The fall has involved a correction in prices, especially those of base metals. Industrial users of these metals should benefit from a price fall.
