Taking the shots
Article Abstract:
The Mexian stock market has fallen by 50% in the 3 months to Jan 1995 and this has affected investors in funds based on Latin America. There has also been an effect on emerging markets as a whole, which raises fears that US capital could be repatriated on a large scale. Emerging markets offer long term advantages so are likely to return to favor. They offer both better returns and more risk than European markets which do not offer much for investors in Jan 1995.

No opportunity
Article Abstract:
Morgan Stanley argues that the Thai baht could continue to fall, so currency devaluations in Asia should not be taken as a signal to buy. Interest rates are likely to rise which has led to wage rise demands in the Philippines. Currency instability also tends to hamper stock price rises. China's exports may become uncompetitive as other countries devalue nearby, and Japan and the US may also be affected. Equities could be hit world wide rather than just in Asia.

Central Europe: huge potential
Article Abstract:
HSBC James Capel forecasts a strong performance for share prices in Central Europe. Stock markets in the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary tend to be illiquid and small. Economic policies promoting liberalization and deregulation should help economic growth. There is also a move to promote stockmarkets in central Europe. The market capitalization could increase tenfold in the five years from 1996, following the examples of Asia and Latin America.
