Microsoft Excel
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp's Microsoft Excel is a powerful spreadsheet package for the IBM PC with charting, macro, and worksheet functions. Excel uses a mouse to control functions in the various Microsoft Windows displayed on the screen. The window layout greatly reduces keystrokes and allows more than one sheet to be visible on the screen at any one time. Microsoft Excel also features 131 different functions, 224 programmable macros, and 44 different types of charts to choose from. Excel allows for quick font and border changes, worksheet consolidation, and printing. The program requires at least a 80286 machine with a mouse, EGA display and 1Mb of RAM. Excel is also available for Macintosh machines.

UNIX for your business?
Article Abstract:
Businesses can improve cost-effectiveness through the use of the UNIX operating system. UNIX, a multi-user, multi-tasking operating system, has the ability to share resources, such as processors, disks, and printers. UNIX eliminates the possibility of having to use proprietary systems or systems that are inflexible. One of the useful features of UNIX is its ability to redirect the output of one program as input into another one, while running the programs simultaneously. Businesses that are considering the use of UNIX should make sure that their supplier provides adequate support.

Predict!
Article Abstract:
Predict!, a kind of spread sheet package, uses probability and financial functions to determine the uncertainty associated with a current outlay for an undetermined return in the future. Predict! is an impressive tool for investment appraisal and comparison in large companies with limited investment capital, but it is probably too sophisticated for small companies. The system runs on an IBM PC, PC-XT, PC-AT, or IBM-compatible computer, with MS DOS version 2.1 or later, and at least 512K RAM.
