Steady progress for the voluntary sector
Article Abstract:
The main 500 UK charities saw a rise in their income in real terms of 2.4% for 1994 to 1995, according to the Charities Aid Foundation. Sales from the charity shops of these organizations dropped by 9.4% in real terms but appear to be recovering. Charities are concerned about the impact of value-added tax changes which have led to lost income. They are also concerned that income from legacies will cease to grow due to a stagnant housing market, usage of wealth for medical and other spending, and demographic factors.

The Barings fallout for charities
Article Abstract:
The collapse of Barings plc has hit many charities. These include the Royal School for the Deaf, located in Margate, England, which held preference shares. The Baring Foundation's charitable donations are affected hitting charities such as the Kings Cross Homelessness Project. Barings was the biggest corporate donor of cash for charities in the UK. Diversification by trustees may not be the answer since the wishes of benefactors have to be considered.
