Tax software programs continue to add features as electronic filing support grows
Article Abstract:
A survey of 70 tax schools and seminars reveals that practitioners are making more use of in-house computers and tax return preparation software, a phenomenon fueled by the increasing demand for electronic filing. Practitioners choosing a software package should select a package that satisfies the needs of the practice and should consider hardware, the method of data entry, the integration between forms, the printer, and other desirable options. Network systems are becoming increasingly popular as practitioners with more than one computer can link them to share peripherals. Laser printers are increasingly being used by practitioners using in-house tax preparation software. Coupled with the increase in electronic filing is the emergence of refund anticipation loans, loans based on the anticipated refund, which represents a significant expansion of service. A listing of the products and services offered by 74 software companies and a hardware cross-reference chart is presented.

In-house packages continue to stress electronic filing
Article Abstract:
Statistics show that using in-house computers is the most popular tax return preparation method. Almost 11 million tax returns were electronically filed in 1991, and this figure is expected to reach 14 million in 1992. A number of companies developing tax preparation software packages were asked to identify the features they think should be considered when buying tax software. In addition to such features as support, ease of use, integration and delivery, these software developers also cited print options, network support and capability to handle incomplete returns. A list of companies offering tax preparation programs is provided. Information on their location, print methods, output options, prices, and federal forms handled are also offered.
