The Moon Treaty: prospects for the future

Article Abstract:

Countries such as the US failed to ratify the Moon Treaty of 1979 because of its provisions against private property ownership. As the treaty celebrates its 15th anniversary in 1995, it has become apparent that the most plausible approach to regulating the exploitation of the Moon's resources is through private ownership with limited governance. If such a principle is adopted, it can be expected the US and the other countries which opposed the 1979 treaty will reconsider their positions.

Buying Russian technology - pros and cons for the US program

Article Abstract:

US Pres George Bush's decision to buy Russian space technologies offers several advantages and disadvantages that could affect the country's economic and space development programs. Russian products, such as the Soyuz TM, Energiya launch vehicle and Topaz II space nuclear reactor, could significantly enhance existing US's space technology. However, the influx of these products into the US will also result in less job opportunities for American scientists and space industry workers.

The success of the US's manned Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) will depend on the scientific community's support and participation. However, scientists must first be convinced about the feasibility of sending manned spacecrafts to other planets and how SEI could benefit the US's troubled civilian space program. The costs involved to successfully carry out SEI and its possible repercussions on other projects should also be considered by its proponents.
