The global custody village
Article Abstract:
Trends in the global custody market include increasing use of new technology which has contributed to consolidation, since some smaller players cannot afford this investment. The global custody operations of Chase Manhattan and Chemical bank have been merged with the parent banks' merger. Pension funds are increasingly using global custody services with independence from the fund management house. Demands for detailed information are increasing as the market becomes more competitive. Emerging markets present a particular problem for custodians.

Global custody: the great shake-out has started. When it's all over, it will be possible to count the number of truly global custodians on the fingers of one hand
Article Abstract:
The custody of pension fund assets has been thrown into the limelight following recent legislation. The National Association of Pension Funds supports the appointment of an independent custodian, and many banks are now reappraising their continued commitment to the global custody business. The number of truly global custodians will be reduced to about five players in the future, and if service standards are to be maintained, custodians must gain reasonable reward from it.

Twin hurdles
Article Abstract:
The global custody market will be affected by the millennium and by European monetary union, both of which involve major infrastructure projects. Consolidation is a likely result of both these events. There are a number of issues that have to be tackled. These issues include communications, payments, systems connectivity, flexibility, and competition for local service provision. Companies will need global infrastructure in order to meet these challenges.
