The puzzle of sterling's rise
Article Abstract:
The pound has risen over 4% against the euro since early January and its trade weighted index is higher than in early October. Emu has triggered attacks on the European Central Bank's independence and has not bee the catalyst for labour-market reforms aimed at reducing unemployment. UK base rates remain higher than those of other developed economies and the absolute return on short-term UK assets gives sterling major support. The UK economy should recover later in 1999, and it is noted that currencies whose economies are expected to recover, tend to rise.
