Scotland-based Thomas Ford (Bakers) Ltd has chosen to expand its operations in St Petersburg, Russia. The idea to go to Russia began forming in 1989 when the mayor of St Petersburg, then named Leningrad, intimated to a friend of Thomas Ford Dir Peter Ford that food manufacture and distribution in the city was a major problem. The Scottish baking firm decided to establish a joint venture bakery in St Petersburg, which they called Karavai, with Peter Ford as chairman and with directors comprising of two Scots and three Russians from one of the republic's largest bakeries. Ford admits that operating in Russia has not been easy. The baking firm has had to contend with the problems of supply, the different cultural attitudes, and the Russian bureaucracy. Still, Ford is pleased that they have already established a presence in Russia, which he believes will grow to become one of the largest markets in the world in a few years' time.

Joining the uppercrust in training
Article Abstract:
Falkirk-based Mathiesons Bakery is the Scottish craft bakery industry's leader in personnel training. Mathiesons' commitment to personnel development began when George Stevenson took over as managing director in the 1980s. Stevenson recognized that the bakery was in dire need of a proper training structure that would enable it to surmount the many problems besetting the industry, including the diminishing craft skills and the disappearance of the apprenticeship scheme. In its search for the best training program that would stop the decline in the quality of products and services, Mathiesons developed the Baking Industry Training Scheme which assesses job performance against specific standards. This scheme was eventually adopted by the entire craft bakery industry. The effectiveness of Mathiesons' training program is evident in sales figures, quality measurements and, more importantly, in the changes in employee attitudes.

Hunter on the chase

KPMG Peat Marwick-Scotland Sr Partner Archie Hunter is convinced that opportunities exist for accountants in Scotland despite the bleak economic environment. Accounting firms are finding it harder to generate business due to the recession-induced shrinkage of the market and the pressures to reduce fees. Nonetheless, Hunter recognizes opportunities for accounting firms, such as in the area of consultancy. Consultancy advice is particularly in demand for management and funding issues in privatization programs and in the restructuring of health, education and local government in the country. According to Hunter, the current business environment compels accounting firms to focus on satisfying customer requirements.
