UK: ASDA TO INCREASE NON-FOOD OFFERING
Article Abstract:
Asda, the UK supermarket chain, is likely to increase its non-food offerings during 2000, as a result of capitalising on the purchasing power of parent company, Wal-Mart. Chief executive Allan Leighton claims that non-food is capable of accounting for almost 50% of Asda's total offer, without impacting food sales. Asda will also have access to a just-in-time supply system in September 2000, allowing the supermarket to free up considerable backroom space. Asda is already strong in the clothing market, via its George range, and claims to be the fourth largest music retailer in the UK.

UK: SAINSBURY'S TO OFFER ON-LINE BANKING
Article Abstract:
Rodger McArthur, chief executive of Sainsbury's Bank, has confirmed that on-line banking will be a feature of Sainsbury's new web site by early 2000. The bank will have its own pages, accessed via a hypertext link on the GB[pound] 15mn main site. It will offer mortgage and personal loan services, as well as access to customer accounts. The possibility of utility bill payment is also being considered. The Sainsbury's Orderline home shopping service, meanwhile, is to include pay-as-you-talk mobile phones as a permanent feature following a Christmas trial, and there is speculation that holidays and cars might also be introduced. Homebase and Savacentre are likely to be merged into Orderline, with possible links to other retailers which redeem Reward points.
