Where the Aid Is
Article Abstract:
While most aid for college comes from the government, and is intended for students whose families earn too little to pay for a college education, there is help available for families with higher incomes. About one-half of all students receive some aid, and the higher priced private colleges often offer more to entice students than the lower priced public schools. The schools themselves are the second largest source of aid to students. The first place to start is to go through the needs analysis process, which determines, how much you can afford to contribute to your child's education, and is used by almost all institutions. An institution may then offer aid in forms ranging from grants, to loans to student work programs. In addition there are loan programs for parents, and many innovative programs available from both colleges and private sources which can help pay those large college bills. Before doing anything, a family should assess their financial position and try to find an institution which will suit everybody's needs.

Scouting Out Home-Town Scholarships
Article Abstract:
There are many scholarships available which do not depend on need or brains or brawn; and many of these may be offered right in a student's home town. Organizations such as the Knights of Columbus award scholarships, as do many civic, religious and fraternal groups, as well as many businesses, unions, and trade organizations. There are computer services which list these many sources for college money, as well as books or high school guidance counselors who can be consulted. In addition money is given out by almost one thousand colleges in the form of one hundred thousand scholarships, many of which are based on merit, not need. There are books which can be obtained to describe all of these available scholarships. The family who does a little searching may find just the right scholarship to help with a student's large college expenses.
