A Swiss army knife for beginners
Article Abstract:
Ulead Systems' $349 MediaStudio multimedia authoring and presentation software is a collection of utility programs, including video and audio capture, video and audio editing, morphing and Photo CD playback. MediaStudio offers modules for capturing almost every type of media, including video, audio, screen images and scans. The Image Editor can be used to capture still images with most scanners. It offers many features for touching up bitmap images, and is compatible with several input and output formats. The Screen Capture mode provides several options, allowing capture of the current window or the whole screen. Users can snap up to 120 screen shots per sequence, with intervals from one second. Also included is a CD-ROM with several images, clips and sounds. The Morph Editor lets users change an image into another by adjusting position or content, and a Viewer utility is included for quick examination of media files and a media database.

Macromedia Flash 2.0
Article Abstract:
Macromedia's excellent $299 Macromedia Flash 2.0 Web authoring software allows Mac or Windows users to enhance their Web pages. A free Shockwave Flash plug-in feature allows users to play their Flash programs through browsers. Flash programs provide a multitrack movie timeline, to which users can add elements and create at least one scene. Some of Flash's fairly large number of drawing tools, such as the paintbrush, lend sophistication. Other drawing tools are available in leading vector and bitmap file formats. The Trace function handles the conversion of imported bitmaps to outlines. Buttons account for one of the best Flash features, as they manage four frames of animation. Flash will challenge less-experienced Web authors, but more seasoned users will not experience difficulty. Tech support is free for the first 90 days, followed by annual or per-question charges.

Multimedia authoring isn't just a two-way street
Article Abstract:
Cross-platform multimedia tools are proliferating to accommodate PCs, Macintoshes, and larger systems on workstations, and even supercomputers. Many vendors are broadening their scope to include set-top boxes as well. Some cross-platform products still use a command-line interface, and many offer a scripting layer to provide greater control. Some environments use a slide or card metaphor, and others, used in computer-based training, use a flowchart metaphor. Reusable components play a major role in the latest object-oriented authoring programs. These not only provide a library of objects that can be used out of the box but provide users with the ability to create their own custom objects. Most of the applications have separate player modules, which are typically a smaller version of the authoring environment.
