Publishing on the World Wide Web
Article Abstract:
The World Wide Web is a set of online linked resources. A standard handle, known as the Uniform Resource Locator, is used to reference a document. Documents offered by an information provider are prepared in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). The provider must also have a HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) server to deliver the information, as well as a full-time leased-line Internet connection. Some prefer to run their own servers, while other organizations may find it easier to rent time on another provider's server. The server does not have to be an expensive Unix system, any multitasking platform with a powerful CPU will be adequate. An HTML document preparation service is typically retained to create a professional design for the home page documents. If graphics and media files will be offered, take into consideration how long they will take to download on the other end.

Corralling your content
Article Abstract:
Superdistribution and watermarking offer viable alternatives for protecting intellectual property over the Internet. Dr. Brad Cox of George Mason University maintains that superdistribution compensates content providers immediately when their information is consumed. This concept benefits consumers by providing them with intriguing samples of works and products as well as creators who receive immediate payment. Digital watermarking, a direct descendant of document watermarking that dates back to the Middle Ages, protects information by carrying source information along with content. The Library of Congress is evaluating IBM's Digital Library watermarking tool as a possible means of protecting Internet exhibit material copyrights. Playboy, however, users Digimarc's invisible watermarking alternative and MarcSpider service to ferret off rampant picture pirates.

Middleware eases the Webmaster's burden
Article Abstract:
A table of Web middleware database connectivity tools is presented. For each product listed, the guide provides the manufacturer's name, Web site address, and phone number. The table also discusses features of each product, along with compatible server platforms, database interfaces, and product price. Web middleware provides definite performance enhancements over the more traditional CGI. While CGI provides a connection between Web servers and live databases, separate CGI programs written in languages such as Visual Basic, C, Perl and AppleScript must be developed for each task. These programs rarely reuse code despite the fact that they carry out similar tasks. The majority of Web middleware, however, maintains constant communication with the server, despite outstanding transactions, by loading a single program.
