Automation Outlook
Article Abstract:
Critics of office automation say that it segments jobs, reduces workers to lower positions, and usurps their working life. Supporters contend that automation provides new skills and opportunities, eliminates many boring tasks, and is responsible for the dissemination of more information than was ever possible before. It is not technology that is to blame for the criticisms, but the way it is used. Though the basic purpose of automation is to increase productivity, it is equally important to address the needs of the individual.

Article Abstract:
Complexity, incompatibility, and lengthy learning time are some of the problems faced by Personal Computer (PC) users in spite of vendor promises to the contrary. IBM has given some stability to the industry with its open architecture PC. Recently IBM has added the PC-XT-370 and 3270 PCs to its line. Since three- quarters of big businesses use IBM mainframes, they may choose to stick with IBM as they expand their systems with PCs and stay with the vendor they know.
