Communications Grows in Office Automation
Article Abstract:
Nine hundred billion dollars of communication equipment will be sold by 1990. Yet technology is advancing so fast business can not keep up with the changes in equipment. Products which were sold in significant numbers were personal computers, workstations and facsimile equipment. Additionally, the ability to link the systems together has increased, as well as greater use of Telex and TWX. Cable and satellite use will grow and technology will take over the mailroom. Users are advised to do a cost-benefit analysis, choose equipment that is flexible, begin on a small scale and examine such factors such as price and maintenance.

Communications: Working the Cultural Network
Article Abstract:
There are two networks in a company: the formal organization and an informal network which may be more important. It is essential for good managers to understand this network and use it effectively. There are seven types of figures in this network. They are the storyteller, the priest, the whisperer, the gossip, the secretarial sources, the spies and the cabals. Management must identify these people, cultivate those who are effective and use this other network to accomplish their most important tasks. A poor manager will either not understand it or avoid dealing with it.

Rite and Rituals: Culture in Action
Article Abstract:
Rituals within companies function as a cohesive force for effective work production and employee identity, even if the rituals themselves have no visible tangible benefits. Common managerial rituals are holding meetings, decision making and coordination. Smart companies will use rituals in the termination, hiring and reward of employees. Rituals give managers a greater ability to regulate the company, but managers are often reluctant to directly affect company conduct.
