To fight the growing chemical (drugs and alcohol) abuse problem in industry, companies are establishing Employee Assistance Programs (EAP). Xerox's program is headed by Robert Frederick and Control Data's by C.R. Jones. These programs are intended primarily to get information, make diagnoses, and do referrals. Control Data turns to community services for therapy while Xerox has a contract with Family Service Association of America to provide nationwide support. Human Resources run companies' EAPs for them. Key factors in the success of this approach is confidentiality, promotional efforts, and financial support.

Office Environment Can Increase Productivity
Article Abstract:
Office productivity can be improved with a good physical environment. A recent study conducted by interviewing 4,000 managers, workers and other professionals concluded that good planning in office design had direct results in per capita office worker production. Figures given for increases are $1,613 for managers annually, $1,674 for technical persons and $434 for clerical personnel.

Verbatim's Latest Effort? Return Warmth to Office
Article Abstract:
The Verbatim Corporation and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art have embarked on a joint venture to change the sterile look of automated offices. Verbatim has allocated $100,000 for the purchase of paintings through the museum. The paintings will be reproduced as posters and distributed to all the company's offices.
