Credit Control - A Survey
Article Abstract:
A survey was under taken in Wales to determine credit policies of builders' merchants. All had similar credit policies although their turnovers ranged from 23,000 to eight million pounds. The use of discounts has declined, although it is an effective method of persuading customers to pay their bills within a month. Only a small percentage charged interest. Most respondents billed very slowly. Some companies limited credit to unreliable customers. Two small companies insisted on new customers paying cash although many became less reliable once credit had been established. The use of more severe methods of payment collection does not necessarily indicate a poor credit management system. Monitoring the credit system will help to spot problem customers and locate inadequate credit policies. Only eight respondents had a computer system. Management of a credit system is complicated by the inherent uncertainty and the expense of utilizing sophisticated methods. Tables of survey results are included.

How British Companies Have Survived the Recession
Article Abstract:
A study of over 700 British companies that have survived the recession has revealed a number of interesting facts. The major point is that a number of surviving companies have actually increased their net capacity by increasing their efficiency of labor, energy and capital investments. These survivors have done so by concentrating their resources into more efficient and modern plants and equipment and by closing down marginal operations. This recession has resulted in a winnowing process as larger, more efficient firms have increased their share of the market at the expense of smaller firms.
