Indigo Group capitalizes on the hill
Article Abstract:
Indigo Group Omnimedia (IGO) began as a 3D visualization company, became a Web site developer, and is now also an online ad agency. IGO Pres and co-founder Sparky Wilson likes to view the company as the focal point of the Internet in Washington, DC. When BTG and PointCast developed a free online news network for federal employees they turned to IGO. The Web site, known as FedCast, employs PointCast's push technology. IGO is selling advertising space for the network and helps advertisers to develop their ads and linked pages. The advertisements are single page infomercials, not banner ads. IGO specializes in simplified, well-targeted Web sites. The company is currently redesigning the Legi-Slate information service, which tracks bills going through Congress. The online service offers free information, but had few users because it had too many pages. IGO is simplifying the site, making it easier to use and to locate information.

Winning the Web gamble
Article Abstract:
Despite the giant risks involved in investing on the Web, online publishers are entering the market with gusto. A successful Web business strategy for publishers would be to balance the Internet's unpredictability and mutability against various tested strategies that include maintaining focus, prioritizing customer needs, leveraging existing resources, keeping operations lean and smart, and forging new alliances. Such balance can be maintained not only with planning and money, but also with daring and innovativeness. Web advertising, which is the most lucrative revenue stream, generated more than $906.5 million in 1997 and revenues are still growing. The field is getting more competitive, however, as more Web sites jockey for ad dollars. Another possibility is to set up premium-service club areas where users are required to register to access archives, personalized services and exclusive chat rooms.

License to bill: shopping agents
Article Abstract:
Shopping bots, or intelligent shopping agents, comb the Internet for the best deals and provide users the results in seconds. As they learn more about consumers' shopping habits and preferences, these shopping bots can become more effective since they can be programmed to search the Net even when a user is not logged on. Bots are a threat of bricks-and-mortar retailers because they encourage people for buy from the Web rather than going to stores. The next generation of bots will offer even more advantages, such as assisting buyers in completing transactions within a prescribed budget. 'Snipe tools' are also emerging that automatically place bids on auctions on without the need for human intervention. Andersen Consulting is developing the Pocket Bargain Finder, a portable phone with a wireless modem and a stylus for barcode scanning.
