It's a textured world
Article Abstract:
Multimedia designers have the benefit of many low-cost image programs able to create an assortment of textures for designing elaborate graphic backgrounds. Texture-generation software allows designers to create sophisticated textures which can be included into their designs and simplify processes that were once very difficult. It can be utilized in a variety of design programs such as backdrops, Web page button design and even 3-D texture maps. Textures are classified as either natural textures which mimic natural surfaces or synthetic textures. Most of the programs available come equipped with applications that help with graphic bitmapping and have unique and appealing 3-D interfaces. Before deciding on the correct application, users should determine what variables they need and control level they desire for the finished product. Another important consideration is whether to use a plug-in program for simple functionality and compatibility or a stand-alone program for specialized texture creation. The buyers' guide lists 11 texture-generation programs and 13 tileable CD-ROM collections.

The light at the end of the boardroom: LCD projectors
Article Abstract:
LCD projectors are an attractive alternative to overhead projectors or small notebook screens. An LCD panel does provide some additional functionality, but still has the limitations of having to be run through an overhead projector and requiring a very bright overhead bulb. The LCD projector combines the panel and light source into a single device, and offers higher quality and greater ease of use. The projector can produce a high quality image up to six by ten feet and the device may weigh between 20 and 30 pounds. Some newer devices are lighter. Unlike the LCD panel, the LCD projector does not have a hot spot in the middle of the image and it projects a bright enough image for use in a lighted room. Some higher-end models use a technology to maximize available light to avoid distortion. Some of the new models also offer better color saturation with a dichroic color separator that transmits more colors of greater intensity.

Enter the 3rd dimension; powerful software comes to your desktop
Article Abstract:
A buyer's guide of 3D software products from eleven companies is presented. The programs presented are full featured and provide mainstream solutions of a variety of needs, yet they are relatively inexpensive. The most expensive of these is Vidi's Presenter 3D for Mac; while three, Martin Hash's 3D Animation, The Valis Group's PixelPutty Solo 1.5.2 and Crystal Graphics' Crystal 3D Designer, are all priced at only $199. A basic three step process is involved in creating 3D graphics. These include building a model, adding surface attributes to it and then rendering the completed image. Several of the products presented are also excellent solutions for 2D graphics as well. View modes in the latest 3D programs include magnifier, orthographic and perspective.
