Apple's $1,099 Newton MessagePad 2000 PDA is a portable, easy to use device designed for business users. The product's screen is larger than previous versions. The MessagePad has a stylus pen and data can be entered via handwriting recognition, and an optional keyboard is also available. The PDA sounds alarms for appointments. It includes two PC Card slots for a wireless data modem, telephone modem or any other compatible component. A serial port is also included, which which can be used to connect the keyboard or to link to a Macintosh or Windows-based PC to transfer data. Several pre-installed applications are included, such as a date book, card file, Internet software and word-processor. The MessagePad is an innovative product, but is a bit larger than machines from other vendors, such as Psion's Series 5 and Philips' Velo 1.

Panasonic Personal Computer's CF-25 Mark II is a rugged, powerful Pentium-based notebook computer. A $4,859 configuration features a 150MHz Pentium processor, 16MB of expandable RAM, 2GB hard disk, optional 10-speed CD-ROM drive and NiMH battery. The 12.1-in TFT active-matrix display is bright and sharp. The CF-25 Mark II measures 11.7 by 9.3 by 2.3 in and weighs 7 lbs. The magnesium-alloy case conforms to the DOD's MIL-STD-810E durability specification. The CF-25 Mark II could use a built-in modem, a built-in microphone and better audio quality. The 32-bit PC Card slots will accept two Type III or three Type II devices. The CF-25 Mark II comes with infrared, external-monitor, parallel, serial and docking-station ports. The keyboard is water-resistant.

Acer America's TravelMate 7060 Pentium-based notebook delivers good value, thanks to first-rate power management features, a sensible keyboard layout, good ease-of-use and other attractive features. The 7060, which is sold under the Texas Instruments brand name in the wake of Acer's Jan 1997 purchase of TI's portable PC business, is actually an updated AcerNote Nuovo. A $4,699 configuration comes with a 166MHz Pentium MMX processor, 16MB of expandable RAM, 2GB hard disk, 10-speed CD-ROM drive, lithium-ion battery, 128-bit graphics accelerator, tilt-up keyboard, two-button touchpad, dual angled speakers, 12.1-in active-matrix display and 33.6Kbps fax modem with DSVD. The spacious keyboard features a full complement of Windows 95 keys.
