Taking the nickel tour
Article Abstract:
NewMedia Lab's product testing facility contains computer systems, networks, and audio and video equipment that may help others obtain ideas for their studio design. The lab facility contains a variety of products from a variety of suppliers. Each individual element needs to be carefully integrated into the overall structure of the lab. NewMedia's screening room uses a Sony VPH-1272Q SuperData EX projector with a 10-foot diagonal screen. The large screen is powered by computers and video sources located in multiple testing rooms throughout the lab. VGA distribution amplifiers ensure a clean display. Computers from Gateway, Compaq, Apple, SGI, Sony and Sun are connected via 10BaseT Ethernet and 100BaseT Fast Ethernet networks.

Projecting a winner
Article Abstract:
NEC's $7,495 MultiSycn MT800 is judged the best of nine multimedia projectors evaluated. The digital-light-processing (DLP) MT800's excellent 134:1 contrast highlights the best computer and video picture of the group, complete with dazzling whites and saturated and true colors. Drawbacks include a poorly engineered infrared remote. Other fine projectors include Epson's $7,299 ELP-3500, In Focus' $9,199 LitePro 720 and Toshiba's $8,995 MediaStar TLP411U. The ELP-3500 has an extremely bright 100W bulb. The LitePro 720 has an excellent industrial design and fine brightness uniformity. The MediaStar TLP411U delivers the best color uniformity of the group as well as very good brightness uniformity and first-rate video scaling.

Media 100 and Vincent beat the competition
Article Abstract:
Data Translation's Vincent video processing card is a powerful video platform for the Power Mac 9500, 8500 and 7500 systems. A new PCI architecture solves many of the problems the card's previous incarnation faced. The card is a single unit so users are permitted to increase speed even more on the Mac systems with a SCSI accelerator card; display cards can also be added for 3D functionality and acceleration. Because of its single-card design, Vincent is able to avoid noise problems found in other implementations. The potential problem of sync loss is also eliminated. Though it is priced at $20,990, it is frankly the best nonlinear editing system available for either Mac or Windows platforms.
