The Evolution of the Calculator
Article Abstract:
Advances in the semi-conductor industry has resulted in the rapid growth of calculator products in Japan. The advances made in design, functions, and use have expanded calculator use as an office tool, consumer product, multiple functional device and information processing device. Approximately sixty-five million units were exported from Japan in 1983. Calculators range from electronic, desk-top, battery-powered, solar-powered, and portable units. The integration of functions has increased competition and lowered prices. The automation of calculator production has lowered labor costs and improved product quality. There are photographs of different calculators and a graph indicates shipment and volume trends.
