Great White struggles to hold on
Article Abstract:
Waco, TX-based boatbuilding and repair company Great White Marine and Recreation Inc is struggling to survive in the midst of a financial scandal involving its former president, A. Colin Smith. The SEC has accused Smith and the company of stock fraud in a lawsuit filed late in Jul 1999. The agency alleged that Smith devised a scheme where the firm fraudulently distributed unregistered stock shares to generate almost $11 million. Smith also converted $3.5 million for his own use and utilized at least $1 million to make fraudulent dividend payments to shareholders in a blatant Ponzi payment.

A crop of 'nightmare' lemon legislation
Article Abstract:
Another series of legislation regarding boat defects is being closely tracked tracked by marine manufacturers and dealers at state legislatures nationwide. Nicknamed lemon-law proposals or lemon legislation, these measures are frequently introduced at the behest of angry boaters and generally imitate laws which compensate the owners of defective cars. Legislators, however, have admitted possessing few statistics on boater complaints. The lack of such documentation has led to calls in the industry to conduct more research before peremptorily passing such legislation.
