Canada Post asks to raise lettermail rates
Article Abstract:
Canada Post Corp. of Ottawa, Canada, is proposing to increase the basic rate mail in Canada by one cent on Jan. 1, 1999, to 46 cents. The rate increase, which is still subject to approval by the federal government, will affect only lettermail, which is equivalent to the United State's First Class. Advertising mail and distribution services within Canada will remain unaffected. The postal service posted a net profit of $36 million on revenues of $5.1 billion during 1997-1998. However, Canada Post spokesman Jean-Marie Filion cited that the revenue decreased by $19 million over 1996-1997 and that the post had expected at least $100 million more in profits.
