Combined operation: a beginner's guide to PFI hospitals
Article Abstract:
The contracts for the first two large hospital schemes to be built using the UK government's private finance initiative (PFI) are due to be signed shortly, and it is likely that these will be followed by many others. The government predicts that 165 million pounds sterling will be raised for PFI schemes in 1996, with a total of 700 million pounds sterling being raised over the next three years. There are 48 PFI schemes which could receive approval in the period to mid-1997, but smaller schemes where bidding costs are likely to be higher than the potential return could find it hard to get off the ground.

Fitness test
Article Abstract:
John Laing Construction is working on a design, manage and construct project for Health Care International. The project is for a 256 bed private hospital and an adjoining 174 bed hotel. Laing has been given more freedom than is usual with a contract which emphasised the building's fitness for use. This could lead to problems of subjective judgement but Laing is employing specialist designers and is continually consulting with the client. The hospital has to be finished within 33 months and disputes can be decided by the project manager.

An aesthetic treat
Article Abstract:
Kier Design and Build is challenging the accepted image of design and build with its Fife District General Hospital Phase 2 project. Design and build is not normally seen as acceptable for complex buildings and does not have a reputation for producing good architecture. However, the hospital is architecturally interesting and the project is proceeding with little difficulty and will be completed well ahead of similar, traditionally procured projects.
