Firms look to fill Wal-Mart data hole
Article Abstract:
Wal-Mart Stores Inc's decision to discontinue selling the point-of-sale (POS) customer information it collects at its 21,000 outlets caused mixed views from market research companies and analysts. In fall 2000, the world's biggest retailer decided it was helping its rivals by releasing the information it gathers from the electronic scanners in its checkouts aisles. Bentonville, AR-based Wal-Mart has been selling POS data to at least six companies that include A.C. Nielsen Co, Information Resources Inc and Sports Trend Info.
