Grand award: software firm headquarters an antebellum mansion
Article Abstract:
Magnolia Park, Gary Brown Assoc's office in Colfax, NC, won the Sterling Award for Best Overall Light Commercial Project and Best Office Building. The office design reflects that of an antebellum mansion which fits the site where willow oaks and southern magnolias formed a classical plantation landscape. Architect Alan Cox of Moser, Mayer, Phoenix incorporated a hip roof, painted redwood columns and an eastern white pine elevation to enhance the plantation house motiff. Meanwhile, W.H. Weaver Construction erected the building at $65 per square foot, reducing construction costs by 1.5%.

Merit award: wood-framed building finds niche in Madison
Article Abstract:
6410 Enterprise Lane won a Sterling merit award for 1992. The 38,932 sq ft wood-framed building's focal point is its recessed corner with its red column facing the Beltline in west-end Madison, WI. Architect and project manager Timothy Kritter cites financial factors as the deciding element in opting for a wood framed structure although some portions of the building made use of steel beam and column-support systems. The building contains an underground garage and a leasable space of 24,207 sq ft.

Grand award: Washington restaurant a double winner
Article Abstract:
Chestnut Cottage restaurant in Port Angeles, WA, won the Sterling Grand Awards for Best Restaurant and Best Commercial Interior for 1992. Owners Ken Nemirow and Diane Nagler collaborated with architect Doug Arrington to create a restaurant that has a warm and traditional ambience. Attention to detail was given to interior elements, with emphasis on the kitchen and movement patterns. They used American black cherries and Douglas fir trees in the booth designs and came up with a dramatic effect.
