Helping hands
Article Abstract:
The Building Centre Trust in London has joined forces with several developers and builders to make temporary shelters for the homeless from empty commercial buildings under the auspices of Construction Relief and Assistance for the Single Homeless (CRASH). The Salvation Army was offered Atlantic House at Holborn Viaduct by Prudential Portfolio Managers and the Crown Estate. The 39,000 pounds sterling renovation project was completed in one week. The City of Westminster provided another shelter at the Abbey Community Centre at a renovation cost of just 8,000 pounds sterling. The Trust also aims to consider ways of moving people into permanent accommodation.

Article Abstract:
Philanthropy within the construction industry seems to be declining, and both the Builders' Benevolent Institution (BBI) and the Building Industry Youth Trust have seen a fall in donations. The BBI, a charity which represents the British construction industry, received donations of only 20,000 pounds sterling in 1992. The BBI now plans to raise its profile, both to gain more active backing from construction firms, and also to encourage needy cases to ask the BBI for aid. The Building Industry Youth Trust, which helps underprivileged young people through aid for building programmes, saw donations fall to 34,000 pounds sterling in 1991.
