Article Abstract:
There is growing support for the introduction of a mandatory registration scheme for UK construction companies as a way of improving the industry's currently very negative image. The Construction Industry Board is looking at creating a national qualification list of contractors based on the Construction Management Information System. However, there are mixed views about whether this approach would bring significant long-term improvements. It would perhaps be better to have a mandatory system of company registration.

Practice makes perfect
Article Abstract:
Some believe a statutory framework should be established to encourage good practice within the construction industry, while others claim this would be too inflexible and hard to enforce. Some feel there must be a system for enforcing good practice and that substantial change can only be made through legislation. Most firms do not follow good practice guidelines because they believe their rivals also fail to follow the guidelines. Opponents claim enforcement would be too costly.
