NatWest to split architects' role
Article Abstract:
The National Westminster Bank in England aims to change its approach when employing architectural services so that the initial design work process is treated as a totally separate function from production drawings. The Bank has been disappointed with architectural services in the past, and wants to try this method of management, which is very popular in other areas of Europe. The first programme will involve approximately 10-15 buildings for the bank, and is estimated to value approximately 120-130 million pounds sterling.

New model army
Article Abstract:
Architect epr has a team of in-house model-makers capable of producing accurate presentational models from CAD drawings. The model-makers produce models both for epr and its clients and for government departments and other companies. The firm is making use of specialist US product manufacturing software to cut production time and boost the accuracy of its models. It also has a 50,000 pounds sterling 3D routing machine, and believes that this technology will remain efficient and productive into the foreseeable future.

Re-educating RIBA
Article Abstract:
Owen Luder, RIBA president in the early 1980s, has won a second term following the December presidential election. His concerns over the over-populated and under specialised profession are the same today as 14 years ago. He feels there is not enough work for the 30,000 qualified architects unless the base of the profession is widened, and industry is encouraged to value architects in the boardroom. He feels that architectural schools schools should also teach basic business and management skills.
