Article Abstract:
A study of people living in the newly renovated Holly Street estate, East London, England, found 93% felt they would stay in their property for a long time compared to 80% of people wishing to leave the estate before the work was started. The 97 million pounds sterling regeneration project will take nine years. It will include 1050 homes for either rent or sale and numerous community facilities such as an under-fives building, a day care centre for the aged and a cafe. Architects Levitt Bernstein Associates were careful to include the community during the whole planning process.

The Peabody Trust, social housing trust, has become an active developer, instead of merely looking after housing, according to Dickon Robinson, its director of development and technical services. The trust has spent 250 million pounds sterling on capital building over the last three years. It has expanded its stock by 1,000 units a year, and is planning a further 1,500 units.

Tenants on the Trowbridge council estate in Hackney, London, England, have helped to create their own new homes. Wick Village was formed by the tenant co-operative, Wick Village Tenant Management Co-operative. The tenants had been living in 22-storey tower blocks, which were due for demolition. They have now been rehoused in flats and houses.
