Tory blues
Article Abstract:
The UK Chancellor Norman Lamont proposed little to aid the construction industry at the UK Conservative Party Conference at the beginning of Oct 1992. Lamont believes that cutting inflation to below 4% is the best way to solve the recession. He is against public spending and refuses to cut interest rates. Dir of the Builders Employers Confederation Sir Brian Hill believes that a cut in interest rates is needed. Dir of the House Builders Federation Roger Humber, believes that further capital spending cuts will increase the public sector borrowing requirement rather than lowering it.

Article Abstract:
A campaign by the UK construction industry to encourage the government to invest in the industry has proved successful at the end of Oct 1992. The campaign aimed at lobbying backbenchers has cost an estimated 50,000 pounds sterling since Jun 1992. Prime Minister John Major has pledged to fight for economic recovery and give priority to public building programmes to create jobs and benefit the private sector. Over 400,000 jobs in the construction industry have been lost since 1990 and it is believed that recovery will not be until 1995.
