USPS board OKs equipment upgrades
Article Abstract:
The US Postal Service Board of Governors has appropriated budget for the improvement of the agency's letter- and parcel-sorting equipment capabilities, which will reduce labor costs and save $250 million over the life of the equipment. The upgrades will transfer 450 million pieces of mail from expensive manual sorting operations to postal automation by Sep 2001. To be affected by the upgrades are the agency's barcode sorters and carrier sequence barcode sorters, which sort mail down to the delivery route and the order of delivery sequence.
