USPS expects recognition upgrade to save $92M annually

The US Postal Service has disclosed plans to upgrade its letter- recognition technology, which the agency estimates will save more than $92.5 million annually when fully implemented by 2004. The improvements will allow optical readers to read 93% of handwritten and poorly machine- printed letters, as compared to the current technology that can only read 75% of these letters.
