Can you invest ethically?
Article Abstract:
Ethical investment funds allow the public to invest to please its conscience, but some are not as ethical as they claim. Of those interviewees in a Mintel survey, one third said they would pick an ethical investment, even if it had a lower return. Abtrust claims to avoid arms investment, but invests in Weir Group, which makes weapons launching systems. The CIS Environ Trust claims to avoid banned activities but generates over 10% of turnover from arms and other banned areas. Scottish Equitable, Friends Provident and Ethical Investment Fund are the only funds to avoid financial firms, whose investments are impossible to monitor. Many funds try to select companies which are improving environmental and ethical activities. The performance of 17 ethical funds related to the environment, human rights issues, policial donations, arms and animals is also presented.
