It is common to link computers and peripherals together on a network in offices, and it is important to assess printing needs. A smart switch is an inexpensive way of linking a printer to several computers, without having to link the computers to a network. The different types of interface, or port, needed to connect computers to printers including parallel and and serial which ensure printers are compatible with DOS/Windows computers, AppleTalk and LocalTalk, Ethernet and EtherTalk, token ring, wireless networks and automatic interface switching. Automatic emulation switching is useful to detect the printer language being used and interpret it accordingly.

The units were tested for design, performance, such as strength, ease of assembly, and features, such as finish, number of shelves, and the best buys were the Billy from IKEA, the Cube Store Stack and the Boston from Texas.
