Fairfield County
Article Abstract:
The development of Fairfield County, Connecticut which used to be centered on the big building in Stamford and Greenwich, has now extended far beyond that, making the area still quite an active development region. Leasing activity continues to be strong in the region, but much new construction is also being done. Although many of the leases are not as large as in some areas, there are extremely high quality companies which are renting the space. Most of the development is in small and medium sized building, and available acreage in Fairfield County is fetching high prices, as much as one million dollars an acre. Industrial rates are also rising, and high-tech space is getting the highest price of all. After seeing little activity for over a decade, apartment construction is beginning to pick up, and condominium construction, which had been strong in the past, is beginning to slow down. Some industrial companies are leaving the area in search of lower prices. Hotel development is strong, and cities which once had factory town images are in the process of redevelopment plans. Retail space is at a premium, and that available demands top dollar.

The self-organizing map
Article Abstract:
Among the architectures and algorithms suggested for artificial neural networks, the Self-Organizing Map has the special property of effectively creating spatially organized "internal representations" of various features of input signals and their abstractions. One novel result is that the self-organization process can also discover semantic relationships in sentences. In this respect the resulting maps very closely resemble the topographically organized maps found in the cortices of the more developed animal brains. After supervised fine tuning of its weight vectors, the Self-Organizing Map has been particularly successful in various pattern recognition tasks involving very noisy signals. In particular, these maps have been used in practical speech recognition, and work is in progress on their application to robotics, process control, telecommunications, etc. This paper contains a survey of several basic facts and results.
