Causality between government expenditure and revenue in Malaysia: a seasonal cointegration test
Article Abstract:
Seasonality has an impact on the relation between government spending and revenue in Malaysia, as is shown by an examination of data from 1970 and 1994. Seasonal cointegration is found to have a biannula frequency. An model can be set up with an correction for seasonal distortions, and this shows that an increase in government spending is linked to higher taxes over the short term. Government spending decisions thus affect the fiscal deficit, the tax burden, and public sector size and growth levels.
