Contracts for the National Health Service
Article Abstract:
The correct form of contract between purchasers and providers of health care has been a principal issue within the National Health Service (NHS) and the topic of regular guidelines from the NHS Executive. Economic theory suggests that forms of contract must be designed based on circumstances, the level of patients' knowledge about the quality of services provided, the type of condition to be treated and the level of knowledge about the provision costs. These factors should determine whether short-term or long-term contracts are more preferable.

The impact of the NSH reforms on queues and surgical outcomes in England: evidence from hip fracture patients
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine the impact of UK National Health Service (NHS) reform on waiting times for surgery and on post-surgical outcomes. The study found that waiting times for hip fracture patients were reduced following the NHS reforms and that patients were more likely to be referred to another provider. Lengths of stay ending in a discharge to home declined, indicating that hospitals have not just transferred the burden of care to other providers.

Contracting for health services with unmonitored quality
Article Abstract:
Contracts set by the British NHS and the US Medicare system imposing that payment on producers should be based only on the number of patients treated can be improved by including payments for the number of patients demanding treatment. Without direct monitoring of quality or effort to decrease charges, such contracts are effective only when they are efficient to treat all patients wanting treatment.
