Distinguished lecture on economics in government: lesson from past productivity booms
Article Abstract:
The extended periods of strong productivity growth, in the United States, are characterized by innovations in technology that are accompanied by changes in organizational structure and in business financing arrangements and by investments in human capital. It is suggested that the governments play an important subordinate role by supporting basic research and by fostering an economic environment that is conducive to private sector initiative.

Can foreign aid buy growth?
Article Abstract:
The relationship between foreign aid, economic policy and growth of per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP), is investigated using a new database on foreign aid that has just been developed by World Bank. It is shown that, despite the potential benefits of learning from past experience, aid agencies are reluctant to promote honest evaluations that could lead to publicity about failures.

Halving global poverty
Article Abstract:
Poverty trends on a global scale, where the poor are located in the world and how their numbers have changed over time are discussed. It goes on to discuss the relationship of economic growth and income distribution to poverty reduction and suggests an evidence-based agenda for poverty reduction in the developing world.
